Almost Finished!

Hi all! We didn't desert you. The last week has been crazy, crazy, crazy. We have spent every minute in the storage unit sorting through stuff to keep, stuff to send to a thrift shop and stuff to dump. We have managed to downsize from a 10 x 25' storage unit to a 10 x 10' unit. And it isn't even packed full.

One of the days, we ran out of propane thanks to the cold, rainy, crummy weather. So, we packed up the coach and unhooked the power and water. Then off we went to the dump station and the gas station for propane. It was more than a little frustrating to waste an entire afternoon like that when we had so much to do already.

But, it's almost done now. Today we'll clean out the garbage bags and a couple of boxes that are coming home with us, as well as some stuff we are sharing with other people. One last sweep and we are done with that place.
A couple more days to do some work for Doug's mom and organize the coach with the treasures we brought home.

We can almost see the sunshine in Arizona!

Just a Few More Minutes.....

By 9 o'clock this morning we were both up and accomplishing things. Moving day is such a treat that we look forward to cranking it up. Inside, everything was stowed and put away for travel, but the minute Doug stepped outside to get ready he was bombarded with well meaning friends and neighbors.

Everyone had questions and ideas about how to be efficient, where to go next, what to see, etc...etc..etc. For every 5 minutes spent on the coach, he spent 25 minutes visiting. He loves to chat.

Anyway, it was 1 o'clock when we finally pulled out of the park, heading for Mount Vernon. Thank heavens it's only a short drive!

When we arrived at the park, we discovered that half of it is closed for winter and we are one of only a handful of rigs in attendance. We found our favorite spot at the end of the still open end of the park and set up camp. Pics tomorrow.

Another Lazy Day

Another quiet day around the ole homestead. Doug kept busy with his metal detector, coming home with 13 cents. And I spent a little time tracing my Swedish family back into Sweden. Genealogy has come a long ways since the days when we had to spend hours in front of microfiche machines.

The weather blew hot and cold all day with a little more emphasis on cold. Still, it's pleasant enough for short walks. We took some time to discuss our plans for this winter and are both looking forward to some sunshine in the desert. Hopefully, we'll be on our way in about a week.

Going Grocery Shopping

We needed a few groceries today and remembered a little store that we had found last time we were in this area. So, off we headed for Ferndale and the Absolute Savings Grocery store. This is a scratch and dent type store with a little bit of everything and no guarantee that you'll find the same stuff again next time you visit.

But the prices! Upon entry, there is a very large bin with the deal of the day. The first time we shopped here, the bin was full of bottles of salad dressings. Hidden Valley Ranch, Kraft, you name it. At first glance, I thought the sign said $1 a bottle. (That's a pretty good deal) Then I realized the sign read 10 bottles for $1. Yup, 10 cents a bottle. Immediately we had 10 bottles in our cart. We were tempted to get more, but how much salad dressing can we eat and store.

Back to the current visit. The bin was full of 20 oz soda pop bottles that were 3 for $1. Since I don't drink the stuff and Doug isn't fond of bottles of pop (which are difficult to store in the frig) we passed on this bargain. But, around the first corner, I spied 6 packs of Hershey chocolate bars for $1.49. These are more than double that in regular grocery stores. So, I'll be eating chocolate bars for a while. Hooray!

Then, our best bargain was unearthed. We have started doing some baking, thanks to my cousin Jenny. And to our delight, we found packages of yeast (3 packs) for 33 cents a package. We dug through the entire display and found 27 packages that didn't expire until well into 2010. I guess we'll be doing lots of baking now. Bring on the english muffin bread!

After that fun stop, we finished our regular shopping at Walmart for the items we couldn't find at Absolute Savings. But what a fun find for anyone in the Ferndale area.

Sunday is for Fulltimers

Today, we watched a number of rigs pull out of the park on their way home. It brought to mind the many weekends in our little trailer when we had to head back to the house and a "normal" life. We dreaded returning home because we loved our life in the tin can.

And now, we just smile at each other and resume whatever little chore we are working on. We are home! It just doesn't get much better than this feeling.

We turnedour attention back to the Nascar race with the doors and windows wide open and chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven. My oh my!

Beachwood Blahs

Not a lot going on today. I woke up with a bit of a toothache and spent the whole day waiting for it to either go away or erupt into a full blown pain. But, it did neither. Just an annoying, dull ache that comes and goes. Looks like I'll be looking for a dentist on Monday.

We took a short walk through the park today since the sun was shining and it looked so nice. Fooled us! It was cold! Other than that, we just piddled around with minor chores and reading. Doug posted a "for sale" notice in the clubhouse for a couple items out of the storage unit.

And that was the extent of our day. Quiet, relaxing yet semi productive.

Fall in the Northwest

It's that time of year. The leaves are turning glorious shades of red and gold, while littering the ground. The mornings are quite nippy and the days are cool even when the sun shines. Autumn is lovely.

We are at Beachwood Resort near Birch Bay with all of the visiting Canadians. This park seems to be a haven for them in the US. It's an interesting park with one section of mobile homes and park models, one section for tents and covered wagons, and one section for rvs.

The sites are fairly cozy, but we are just killing time here while we finish the storage unit. A couple more weeks and we should be heading for sunshine.

We took a walk this afternoon to the clubhouse where we found this cool mural painted on the side.

A game of shuffleboard and ping pong had us chuckling at our ineptitude but the book selection wasn't too bad. The park has two big pools, one for adults and one for families.

Doug spotted a tiny sliver of red in the blackberry bushes and fought his way through them to retrieve a long stem red rose for me. How romantic is that?

Take a good look at the stem on that rose. It's at least 5 feet long! No kidding!

He put it through a hole in the picnic table with a water jug on the ground and it still sticks up waaay above the table. He knows how to bring a smile to my face.

One Whole Year!

Woo Hoo! A year ago today we began our adventure. And what an adventure it has been so far. We have seen so many new places, met tons of new friends, experienced hundreds of ups and downs and fell in love with the life.

Some people discover that the nomad style isn't all it's cracked up be and scurry back to their sticks and bricks home. We, on the other hand, have discovered a lust for life and adventure that keeps beckoning us around the next bend, next highway and next state.

In a couple of weeks, we will wind our way south again to the sunshine. We still haven't seen all of our friends in the northwest, but if we have missed you, don't give up on us. We'll see you soon.

The storage unit is almost downsized to something more reasonable and the road is calling. I believe the phrase is hitch itch. We don't want to miss a thing.

I'll be updating the blog more often now so hopefully you will all follow us and enjoy the travels from your own comfortable home.

Storage Unit

We moved to a new site in La Conner Thousand Trails and it looks very much like the one we just left. It is a little wider, so we have room for our mat and chairs under the awning. And we have two picnic tables. (We rarely use even one.)

But, the best part is we have phone service now. It drives us crazy when no one can get a hold of us. Plus, I have been doing laundry like crazy. It's nice having a sewer site and not conserving water.

The storage unit is now at the top of our minds and yesterday Bridgit, Chad and the kids brought their truck over to load it up with treasures. They took home our large Costco barbeque, the spare tires off of Doug's van and a few small treasures for the kids. This left us with a nice hole in which to work in the unit. Now comes the fun part of deciding what to keep and what to sell and how to sell it.

La Conner

We're back in the La Conner Thousand Trails park and enjoying the slightly cooler temps.

Our site is snuggled in the trees (which Doug hates) but it stays a little cooler and we haven't had to use the air conditioning at all. We managed to get a satellite signal and no phone signal. We have driven all over the park trying to find a decent Verizon signal. I don't believe there is one.

Yesterday, we took a ride into Burlington and found a neat used bookstore and next to it was a store that buys estates and then sells the stuff.

This was sitting outside and it looks just like a UFO. We used to play a computer game called Myst with the exact transporter in it.

Doug couldn't resist testing it out.

Tomorrow, we are moving to a different site that has a sewer connection and satellite signal. Hopefully, we'll have better power and maybe a tiny phone signal. We'll let you know!

Hoodsport

After leaving Port Townsend, we wound our way back south along Hood Canal to the small town of Hoodsport. We found a small park up the hill towards Lake Cushman and spent three nights in Dow Creek Resort.

It's one of our ROD membership parks (Resorts of Distinction), so we stayed free.

The site was very long and private with a fire pit and picnic table as well as room for the awning and our chairs.

The recent rally kept us hopping for three days and we were looking forward to some quiet time and this park provided it perfectly.

We did take a ride to Lake Cushman one afternoon. It was only a couple miles away. Doug remembers camping there as a kid but I don't believe I have ever been there.

We followed the road around the lake for about 15 miles and even stopped to see some waterfalls tumbling towards the lake. What a beautiful area!

Wednesday, we'll be moving back closer to our old stomping grounds.

Port Townsend Rally

Hi there......we are still here and still busy.

Last Wednesday, we vacated our spot at Chehalis and drove north on Hwy 101 through some beautiful views. The weather was perfect and Hood Canal was at her finest.

Winding and turning through a number of small towns, the highway is enveloped in tall, green trees.

Our final destination was the Jefferson County Fairgrounds where we met with quite a few Alpine Coaches along with some very dear friends for a rally appropriately named "Fred Sez". We only see most of this group once or twice a year, so it was a fine reunion.

The next day, the rally organizers had planned a bus tour to Kingston with stops along the way at Port Gamble and Port Ludlow. We were kept in the dark about the surprise stop and were thrilled to find "My Girl" Rock and Roll museum.

This is a private collection of mementos from the fifties mainly with many other treasures from earlier and later.

First, we toured the old fashioned diner complete with an Elvis section and a Marilyn Monroe section.

The we continued to the car museum which included lots of cars I didn't get photos of.

Outside we found racing memoribilia including this cool funny car.

One of our favorites was this small Airstream trailer......

with this sign on it. 1956 Airstream....Twentieth Century Fox used this trailer on the lot of Elvis Presley's first movie "Love Me Tender".

One family has preserved and prepared this fantastic collection and while it isn't open to the public, anyone is welcome to make arrangements to visit. And, it's available for parties and gatherings. Too cool!

Friday was a day to relax, followed by a seafood dinner. Holey moley! We had huge shrimp, salmon, mussels, clams, salads, bread and cake for dessert.

Another dinner on Saturday left us stuffed to the gills with steak, clams, three kinds of salads, baked potatoes and chocolate cake this time. These rallies are dangerous for waistlines.

Our entertainment for the evening was "The Dukes of Dabob". Their dixieland music was a delightful treat before dinner and the after dinner dancing made us realize how out of shape we all are!

Tomorrow, we all go our separate ways.

Oh, By the Way....

We moved last Thursday. Our destination was the Chehalis Thousand Trails park and we had a nice drive. It was a little hairy going through Tacoma due to all of the idiots on I-5, but we made it.

The park is a pretty, green area with lots of trees. We were surprised that in the middle of July, (prime time for camping in Washington) the park is only about half full.

We chose a perimeter site on our first pass through the park, but Doug couldn't get any satellite signal. So, the next morning, the coach in front of us pulled out and we moved into their space.

Much nicer. Lots of room and an easy satellite signal. Yay!!!!

That evening, we walked down to the cabana overlooking several large fields with a magnificent view of the sunset.

We see the sunset right through the front windshield every evening, but there are several trees that want to block the prettiest parts.

And, it would be a shame to miss this.

It's Official!

She said yes!!!

This beautiful lady, Adriana, agreed to marry this fine young man, Mick. (I'm a little biased.)

Mick proposed Friday evening with the help of their furry kids, Scarlet and Chloe. Scarlet delivered the ring to Adriana by way of a pink ribbon tied to her collar, followed by an apprehensive Mick. And she said yes, yes, yes!

Hooray!! There's a wedding in our future and so much happiness in their's.

How can you not love people that enjoy life so much? All our love and blessings to both of them. (And, it's about time....)

Turn On The Lights

We spent most of the afternoon running errands in Cle Elum. The tail lights on the coach were messed up with the brake lights going out when they should come on and backup lights not working.

We didn't want to get on the road tomorrow and not have proper signals for the people behind us, so Napa and Whispering Pines RV Center were the recipients of our dollars today.

The lights are all working properly now and Doug is busy putting things away for an early getaway. Ha ha ha ha ha ha. (I crack myself up sometimes.)

A Walk in the Woods

Last night, Doug had the pleasure of taking the toilet apart and replacing the seals and other parts. It hadn't worked correctly for quite a while and we finally got the parts and the time. Crappy job, but someone had to do it. Now it works like a champ.

The weather cleared up and today was a nice day for a walk. So we followed the footpath across the road to Lake Easton State Park. Doug had the gps programmed with a geocache about a half mile away.

We followed the Iron Horse Trail for a little ways and then the gps pointed us down a side trail along the bottom of a small mountain. We guessed that the cache would be at the top of the mountain and we were right.

The trail zig zagged up the slope where it was nice and cool. But, with all of the trees, the gps had trouble finding a signal. We found the general area for the geocache, but the coordinates were way off.

So, we just wandered and looked for something out of place. Doug spotted it first and let me find it before saying anything.

It was tucked inside a tree hollow and covered with matching wood.

Doug made our entry in the enclosed book and we restashed it. A pleasant walk back down the hill completed the day.

Washington Weather

Well, we are definitely back in western Washington! The clouds moved in and the air got cold. (relatively speaking) By late afternoon, the rain started, followed by hail.

And not just any hail! Great big clunkers of hail! Doug risked life and limb by dashing outside to pick up several chunks of ice off the ground. That's a dime in his hand and the hail was larger.

Fortunately, it didn't last too long but the noise on the roof was incredible. Hope we don't have any dents!

The rest of the day was dark and cold with us wishing for the southwest sunshine. It was a good day to work on indoor projects. Heck.....it's the middle of July.....what is with this weather?

Roslyn Cemetery

We took a ride to the old, coal mining town of Roslyn, bypassing the obvious sights of the Northern Exposure filmings, and finding the old cemetery.

In actuality, the cemetery is 25 separate but adjacent cemeteries on 15 acres. They were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The town was founded in 1886 and the cemetery was also founded in 1886.

We wandered through the "Old Cemetery" where the ornate iron and wooden fences were gradually falling in ruin.

Many of the headstones are being pushed out of place and trees have grown through some gravesites.

Other areas are still well maintained, including the veterans plots.

Most of the cemetaries are marked according to ethnicity or fraternal or civic organizations. This was one of our favorite signs.

It was a touching and emotional afternoon that really brings our own mortality to the forefront. Time to enjoy life before reality gets in the way.

A Day to Relax

What a nice park. We have met our neighbors on both sides and they are all fulltimers. Lots of stories and advice to swap!

After lunch, we took a ride next door to Lake Easton State Park. The John Wayne Iron Horse trailhead is at one end of the lake so we needed to check out the fishing. The guys with lines in the water said there were very few fish left in the lake.

But the lake is beautiful.

Then we drove through Easton and followed some logging roads up into the hills. There wasn't much to see, but the ride was fun.

Lake Easton

We got a bright and early start leaving Crescent Bar (12:30) on our way to Lake Easton.

I have always wanted to stop at the Wild Horses Monument near Vantage, so this time Doug pulled into the scenic rest area.

We followed the path to the edge overlooking the mighty Columbia River. With such perfect weather, the view was spectacular.

Looking towards Vantage was an equally magnificent sight.

However, I was disappointed to find that the Wild Horses Monument was behind us on the mountainside. They were so far away, it was impossible to get a decent picture.

Following a stop at a small fruit stand, we finally arrived at Lake Easton around 3:15. The sites are shady and the temperature is about 15 degrees cooler. Quite pleasant!

Our site is large with a picnic table and fire pit. And there is even a clearing to see the sky for our tv satellite dish. The power is only 30 amp, but with the cooler, shady temps, we don't even need the air conditioner.
