Cottonwood and Tuzigoot

Here is a photo of our site in the Verde Valley Thousand Trails. There are very few 50 amp sites and we were fortunate to find this one with lots of privacy and a picnic table. It took a little bit of digging (by Doug) to get level but we're delighted to be on the move.

After spending the morning relaxing, we took a ride into Cottonwood. It's an interesting little town that is comprised of two parts. There is Old Town where the visitor information center is located in the historic jail. And then there's the newer part of Cottonwood with Walmart, Safeway, Fry's and every fast food joint you can name.

Next, we spotted the sign for Tuzigoot National Monument. It was on my list of things to see in the area so now was as good of time as any to check it out.

First stop was the information center where we obtained a new annual pass for all of the national parks. The ranger was very informative and fun to chat with while we discovered the indian artifacts found in the pueblos.

The park is a 1/3 mile walk through the dwellings of 12th century Sinagua indians. Unlike the cliff dwellings in the area, these pueblos were built on the top of a small sandstone ridge above the Verde Valley.

Although most of the rooms are just crumbling walls, the top has been reconstructed and is accessible. The 360 degree views of the valley are spectacular.

The settlement was abandoned in the 1500's and no one knows why this group of approximately 250 people deserted the 80 room village.

It was such a nice visit that we may go back up there if we are in the area long enough.

After stopping for a few groceries, we enjoyed a gourmet meal from McD's and a quiet evening with the tv.
